about

Track 9 is a rap song in 9/4 time with a bass line that starts on the second beat. There are many meanings to the chorus "I'm on Track 9 in the cloud." Here are a few. The most obvious, it is the 9th track on the album. Then, "Track 9 in the cloud" or "Track 9 on the internet," which means the song has new life once others hear it. Track 9, because it's in 9/4 time. Track 9 can also be a physical track limited only by the imagination. For example, a train station that connects 9 dimensions, or 9 solar systems, or a train station in the clouds.

The unspoken metaphor. Track 9 is a checkpoint along a journey. It is not the first checkpoint, but how many checkpoints there are is up for interpretation. In the case of this album, it is the 9th track out of 10, or very close to the end of the journey. On my second album, I had 33 songs, so 9 out of 33 is only 1/3 of the way through, and I have recorded over 200 songs in my life, so 9 out of 200 is still pretty new. In none of the cases is it the first step.

To extend the metaphor to specific journeys, it can be a mark of college almost ending, or a career almost ending, or being in a later stage of life. When applied to life, Track 9 gets into some interesting discussions about perspective. I've always believed that I will live a very long life, so I see track 9 as being close to 9 out of 33. Still a significant portion of the journey, but with much more to go than I have already experienced. Many others have a different perspective, and may see track 9 as being out of 10.

I will be publishing a full lyrical breakdown at youtube.com/missionman in January of 2022, so make sure to follow me there (or search for it if the album has already been released) for more on the song.
